Making Art

Artists fascinate me. Their passion, skill, and creativity turn raw materials into works of art. I am intrigued by how artists work, the tools they use, their workplaces. I am inspired by their singular focus. My goal is to make portraits of working artists that bring to life the creative process.

Artists often work in solitude for long hours - some with their favorite music in the background and others not even able to abide the music in the studio next door. I ask to be a fly on the artist’s wall. My subjects have generously agreed. Art does not come easily - I feel fortunate to be an observer of its creation.

With a single-lens reflex camera and a strobe light on its own tripod, I can move around quickly -- stand back to include the workplaces, push in close to the hands and tools at work. I look for the intensity of the artists' expressions, their body language -- I can almost see their minds and hearts at work.
