A Long Desire

On February 28, 2020, I retired from the Postal Service into a world of anxiety and longing. This project is my attempt to cope with the circumstances that define this new reality. I am trying to grapple with my fear of human beings as contagion and my desire to return to some kind of normal that would involve family visits, dining with friends, and great numbers of people gathering in joyous celebration instead of agonized protest. I chose black and white for this work in order to amplify feelings of distance and reflection.

Artist Bio

Kevin Belanger has been photographing the world around him for the past 15 years. His previous experience as a theatre actor/director has greatly fostered his approach to light and composition. He has been inspired by the work of William Eggleston and Gary Winogrand who said “I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed.”

While mainly self-taught he has studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, NESOP and the Boston Center for Adult Education. He attended the inaugural “Photographing People” workshop at the Griffin Museum of Photography taught by Harvey Stein. His work has been exhibited in many group shows at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, The Danforth Museum, the New York Center for Photographic Arts and the Griffin Museum. In 2011 he had a solo show at the Nash Gallery in Easthampton, MA.
