In my neighborhood, as kids, we traded baseball cards, comic
books and prayer cards of the patron saints. Not only did we
know Carl Yastrzemski's batting average, but we could also cite
saintly statistics like who was beheaded or burned at the stake
and when and where this occurred.
"Virgin Mary Blue" has always been
my favorite color, but now I call it "Cerulean." Today,
even though I can still recite the Memorare by heart and the
word "genuflect" can instinctually bring me right
to my knees, I am not the same. Idolls tries to reconcile my
unwavering devotion as a child to the spiritual cynic that I
have become.
Some would say that Idolls is poking fun at
sacred cows. Others would say it is a religious trumpet. The
answer is somewhere in between.
I leave it to the viewer to decide.
