Anonymity
This current body of work entitled “Anonymity” was inspired through my work with a local non-profit agency, HomeStart, Inc.; HomeStart is committed to ending and preventing homelessness in Greater Boston. I’ve sponsored fundraising events for them, but it wasn’t until I attended one of their holiday events that I was drawn into the faces in the crowd and their stories. I’ve tried to capture the soul of my subjects while respecting their dignity … and trying to understand their plight.
Artist Bio
Juan discovered his love for photography in 2014 when he stepped behind the lens to help in marketing his real estate business. He soon realized he was taking more street styled fine art photos than those of the condos and homes he represented.
Juan’s inspiration comes from walking the city to explore street scenes developing within the urban landscape of light, shadow and architecture. He has photographed cites around the world including Paris, Cuba, Colombia, Uruguay and Germany. But most of the time his backdrop is Boston or New York.
Influenced by photographers such as Henry Cartier Bresson, Saul Leiter and Ray Metzker, he developed his skills and discovered his love for black and white photography.
Juan’s first solo exhibition, “Interplay” featured 10 black and white photographs of urban street photography (taken in Chicago and Boston) exhibited at Jamaica Plain Public Library Gallery in 2017. He has also given an artist’s talk at the Leica Gallery Boston followed by a photo walk where he described his methodology for capturing his subjects. Juan recently completed the Photography Atelier course at the Griffin Museum of Photography.
Juan believes that photography goes beyond the art … it’s about life. He prefers his photographic subjects to be un-posed and feature people as they flow through their daily lives.
