William Morse
The death throes of the tree, perhaps, followed by an explosion of new life in its shadow.
Evolution proceeds in recognizable patterns in response to the new conditions created by an endless, essentially infinite number of chance occurrences. These closely-observed landscapes manifest both the chaos and the miraculous success of natural selection.
I approach these scenes with both a sense of awe at the struggle to survive and flourish, as well as an intense wonder at the perpetually unfolding beauty of the world.
Artist Bio
William Morse, a reformed architect, has long been interested in abstraction and asymmetry in artistic expression. Twenty five years ago he discovered the early 20th century Chinese photographic archive of his grandfather Wiliam Leete. At first mainly interested in restoring and printing his grandfather’s photos, he soon re-discovered his own love for photography. He now photographs the natural world.
Morse often photographs in the moraines and seashores of Southern New England. He looks for the elusive but also omnipresent manifestations of small chance occurrences that also contain the patterns and abstractions that we have evolved to notice and appreciate.
He shows his work in monthly Open Studios in the SOWA Arts District of Boston, where he has had his studio for 15 years. There, in addition to his own work, he shows his restored photos of William Leete, and provides Photoshop training, printing and other photographic services to photographers and artists from throughout the Northeast. He enjoys this opportunity to teach and to learn from many accomplished photographers and artists.
