Traveling Circuses

Every spring, advertisements announcing the arrival of small circuses are posted on telephone poles along the roadside. Arrows point the way to striped tents where daring spectacle awaits. If I’m lucky, I see the signs and follow the arrows, camera in hand. If I’m luckier still, I arrive long before the performance begins and have a chance to photograph the exotic life and choreographed work of the circus troupe.

These images are a selection of circus tents, the traveling theaters for promised shows. In this ongoing series of photographs, I’ve used infrared film to capture the aura of glitter and magic that characterizes the extraordinary circus world.
