Mindscapes

Preferring to create an image rather than discover it, I am more at home constructing a picture and photographing it rather than tramping the streets in search of the decisive moment. Cut out shapes, ribbons, paperweights, marbles, mirrors and photographs I've taken previously, have all found their way into my images. Light, shadow, reflection and motion shape the picture, not Photoshop or other computer tools.

For the last few years I have been interested in the relationship between the conscious and subconscious mind. Neuroscientists believe that only 5-10% brain activity takes place in the conscious mind, while the remainder occurs in the subconscious. As a visual artist who relies on intuition, I find this idea intriguing.

A photograph by Abelardo Morell of a glass of water in front of a window, allowing the exterior to show through the glass upside down, inspired me to experiment. At first I photographed glass vessels and balls in front of windows. This evolved to placing the glass objects on a mirror with a variety of textures and images on a light box behind. The reflected upside down images in the glass balls recall hidden, sometimes disturbing, feelings and dreams. By focusing on the glass objects and leaving the background vague and hazy, the image becomes a metaphor for the conscious and subconscious mind.
