Cuba
Traveling to Cuba to photograph has been a dream of mine for a very long time. Part of the draw was the mystique of the unavailable island. A more personal draw was the fact that 60 years ago my parents went to Cuba on their honeymoon. I had seen their images of pre-revolutionary Cuba and wanted to witness the outcome of the post-revolutionary regime. I embarked on my journey with certain expectations of the scenes I would see and images I would capture. I had a Plan.
The resulting series is the product of my unexpected response to Cuba.
While photographing in both color and black and white, it was the black and white images that spoke to me. While there were the colorful boulevards, decaying buildings and old cars that I expected, it was the tropical western countryside away from Havana that I was drawn to. The Viñales Valley and the former plantations outside of Havana that captivated me, especially when photographed in infrared. Here I discovered the beauty, mystery and otherworldliness of the island. This is the Cuba that most resonated in me, it was here that I felt that I found the real Cuba.email website resume
