Union Square, Somerville, sits below Prospect Hill Tower. This monument commemorates George Washington’s presiding over the raising of the first American continental flag in 1776.
In 2008 Union Square is a tapestry of urban life. It is defined by new arrivals from many cultures living and working side by side with second and third generation immigrant families who are now considered life long Somerville residents.
As a replica of the first colonial flag flies above the square I document the ever-evolving story of Union Square. My images bear witness to current life.
For me, the most compelling aspect of photography is the ability of the camera to seize and isolate an instant in time. This one isolated moment becomes a document of a fleeting reality, life as it is now and as a moment in history.
