Alice and I met when we were both teachers of music and movement for young children. Soon after, we began playing piano duets, making our way through the symphonies of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven arranged for piano four hands. Our piano skills matched (with our policy of "molto moderato--when necessary", no presto was too daunting) and so did our delight in the greatness of the music we were playing.
Alice is curious, inventive, and funny. ("I would be a stand-up comic if I didn't have to make a living…..", she says.) She is a teacher and entrepreneur, creating Family Music Makers, a music program for children (infant through pre-school), parents, and caregivers. She wrote music for and produced the CDs that are the core of her program. She is an avid learner, currently investigating attachment theory and how that relates to music learning in early childhood. A dedicated pianist, Alice makes sure she gets a piano lesson at least once a month, no matter what. She is a mother and a grandmother.
I have since stopped teaching young children and turned to another pursuit--photography. Now I use my camera to seek and to share moments of recognition and connection. I am interested in the way in which people, whether age three or sixty-five-and-a-half, make their way in the world.
It has been a pleasure and a privilege for me to make this portrait of my friend Alice as she navigates her life's journey with courage, grace, and humor.
