Barns of Alburgh, Grand Isle County, Vermont

You either love barns or you don’t even see them as you pass through the countryside. Barns today are too often empty, unloved and unrepaired but so very scenic. Every barn generates feelings of nostalgia for me. But why?

I grew up in farm country Minnesota and have always loved the draft horses and cows that live in the barns which dot the Minnesota landscape. In college I pursued Occupational Therapy when the OT education process combined a science education with an art education. The experience also grounded my passion for photography.

One of my college roommates lived on a large dairy farm in Wisconsin, How I loved to visit her family’s farm! I remember sleeping in the attic loft under piles of blankets with a “chamber pot” nearby. A huge breakfast was always ready at 4AM (thanks to her mother) and then we all helped with barn chores for their 80 cows and many calves. Later in the day I loved to photograph them with my Kodak Duaflex II.

When I became a horse owner, horse barns (which are very different from cow barns) became part of my everyday life. My brother now lives in Alburgh, Vermont. Visiting him has given me early morning access to the many horse barns and cow barns of Grand Isle County. I am delighted to have this opportunity to share my Alburgh barn photographs with you.
