Layers 6.0
These self-portraits are a continuation of my “Sixty” series that is about aging, sensuality, and finding beauty, at this age. I have taken the project a step further by examining some of my closest relationships and their influence on me. My inspiration came while unpacking several cardboard boxes containing endless keepsakes: my mother’s antique hats, my aunt’s meticulously labeled jewelry, and my father’s WW II Naval uniform. I add my husband’s pocket tees and sweater vests.
Beginning with a piece of jewelry, hat or blouse, laden with the history of the original owner, I apply make-up, fuss with my hair, and morph my psychological state. I complete my new found look by adding layers of fabric, flowers, and accessories and style the background using scarves, bed sheets, or paper. Then, stepping in front of the camera, I consider and honor the important people in my life while simultaneously contemplating my own state of being.
