Cosmos: A World of Minutia
I am fascinated with organic materials and my studio overflows with my collections of nature’s debris. Recently I discovered mold and have been encouraging fruits and vegetables to decay in petri dishes. I use macro photography to find imagery in the petri dishes that is abstract but still organic.
I am continually amazed by the world of images that can be found when looking at minute details of anything organic. I often find parallels that reveal connections between all forms of nature from the body to outer space to underwater.
As I begin to process my photographs of mold, I modify the images, combining portions of them in a way similar to collage or painting. I change colors, merge more than one image and adjust until I feel a moment of resolution. The images are of nature but modified, as with a painting, not to document but to represent a feeling.
Wanting to emphasize the ephemeral nature of the images, I print on transparent film and hang them away from the wall to give them room to breathe and accentuate their otherworldliness.
