Powerhouse Park

I have spent time in a small Somerville park as part of an ongoing project to document the city. Every season in Powder House Park has a unique character. These images are a sample of the landscape and convey the pleasures I enjoy here.

An underlying theme of my project has been contrasting Somerville’s Revolutionary War roots with the dynamic energy of 21st century urban life. This series of photographs highlight a beautiful park surrounding a landmark of the American Revolutionary War. In 1747 a windmill on a hill became a gunpowder magazine for Colonial Minutemen. This Powder House was the site of an early skirmish on the road to revolution. In the 1930’s a field house reflecting the architecture of the Powder House was built. These two edifices, the Powder House and the field house, along with a unique rock formation anchor a small park of hills and winding paths.

I visit this park often and use my camera to document this quiet oasis in a bustling city.I love this place.
