About the WorkIn this series of photographs I am interested in capturing the ways in which people react to art in public places and non-formal settings. Street Graffiti in particular is a perfect example of an art form that is brought directly to the viewer without any prior selection by curators, art critiques or any media. In making the work I positioned myself near existing artworks, then I shot the people passing by. Through their reactions or lack of reaction to the artworks they become both viewers of and participants in an art making process. The people in these pieces become a part of an art event themselves. RippedĀ paper or the application of additional paint often traces former interactions by unknown participants. By choosing the location and existing art for each piece, I maintained a degree of control over the process while having no control over the people or actions that would become an inherent part of the pictures.
