After years of informal picture-taking on family trips, my interest in photography deepened. I began to appreciate photography’s power to capture a moment and as a means to express myself artistically. My work as a training and organizational development professional has taken me to Asia and Europe where I have used my camera to document the rich diversity of people and places. Trips to the Caribbean and to my wife’s family in South Africa provide opportunities to record local cultures, geography and wildlife. As an avid walker, I also spend hours on New England trails, photographing the interplay of light, plants, water, and geological formations.
Lately I’ve begun to use my camera to tell a story or express a point of view. Recent projects have included: Literacy is Power!, portraits of the students and staff of Project Literacy, in Watertown, Massachusetts; Nature by Two, parallel images of designs in nature from St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands and Cambridge, Massachusetts; photographs for Charles River Light, a group show of natural and urban settings along the Charles River from Hopkinton to Boston; and Meltdown!, documenting the current economic crisis through signs, buildings and people on the street.
I have been inspired by my teachers in classes at the DeCordova Museum, Lesley University, Cambridge Center for Adult Education, Newton and Watertown Adult Education, and the Mass. Audubon Society. Membership in the Photographic Resource Center at Boston University has provided me an opportunity for a portfolio critique, access to a rich library, presentations by noted photographers, and a guide to shows throughout New England.
